I think you should talk about national parks and national parks management. that is very boring to most people. Talk about the species of trees and plants without showing so many pictures. If you do show them on transparencies !!!
I just discovered your excellent blog. I’m an American writer (Connecticut), and I posted a short pro-boredom bit on my website last year. I’ve had some fascinating responses–also some boring ones, I hasten to add. Thought you might like to take a look.
I’m mostly a novelist, but my most recent two books are nonfiction — one about a strange American practice (SISTER BERNADETTE’S BARKING DOG: THE CURIOUS HISTORY AND LOST ART OF DIAGRAMMING SENTENCES). the other about the decline of legible handwriting (SCRIPT AND SCRIBBLE: THE RISE AND FALL OF HANDWRITING). Both topics put many people to sleep, but the books have been astonishingly successful and have awakened plenty of interesting controversy. Boredom is, of course, in the eye of the beholder.
Tiny particles of dust (for want of a better or more accurate description) that float, seemingly suspended, in the light that enters through a large clear glass window into a sealed room (like a bungalow sitting room ideally). That is what I love to watch and contemplate.
What are the specs, how many specs are contained in the illuminated shaft of glass strengthened sunlight at any one time (does the number remain relatively stable) and where do they evetually go (if anywhere)?
I don’t really need to know the answer, I just like sitting in the warm room looking at the spectral display but it would be nice to have a few figuires to grasp hold of.
Hello James,
I love your blog and I am adding Adventures in Stationery to my Christmas list (it’s only September and it’s the first thing on the list). Just wondering – is The Boring Conference always on the May bank holiday weekend? Personally, I would love it to be on a more “boring” weekend that doesn’t coincide with kids’ half terms. Selfish, I know. Do you have a date for 2015 yet?
Isn’t boring lovely? so restful; so comforting. It’s an antidote to the high-stress, frantic atmosphere of day to day life, it’s like a dry refuge, a place to perch when you lift yourself out of the river of stress.
Great write up, bookmarked the blog for interest to read more thank ypou
Hi, saw you on CBS Sunday Morning re: paper clips.
My story (very much true) is about a paperclip that got me a job … and I documented how … a few years ago.
I can send the Word Document, or pdf … if interested.
